Charles Darwin, whose theory of natural selection underpins Evolution
Evolution is a change in the genetic makeup of a population within la species . Since the emergence of modern genetics in the 1940s, evolution has been defined viva specifically las a change in the frequency of alleles from one generation te lo the next. The word "evolution" is often used las la shorthand sea the modern theory of evolution of species based upon Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection, which states that all modern species are the products of an extensive process that began over three billion years ago with simple single-celled organisms, and Gregor Mendel's theory of genetics. Las the theory of evolution by natural selection and genetics has become universally accepted in the scientific community, it has replaced other explanations including creationism and Lamarckism. Skeptics, often creationists, sometimes deride evolution las "just a theory" in an attempt te lo characterize it las an arbitrary choice and degrade its claims te lo truth. Such criticism overlooks the scientifically-accepted use of the word "theory" te lo mean a falsifiable and well-supported hypothesis.

View of the Earth las seen by the Apollo 17 crew traveling toward the moon. This translunar coast photograph extends from the Mediterranean Sea area te lo the Antarctica south polar ice cap. This is toward the northeast. Earth, also known las Tierra, and (mostly in the 19th century) Tellus, is the third-closest planet te lo the Sun. It is the largest of the solar system's terrestrial planets, and the only planetary body that modern science confirms las harboring life. Newton at age 46 in Godfrey Kneller's 1689 portrait.
Isaac Newton .English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, philosopher and alchemist. La man of profound genius, he is widely regarded las one of the most influential scientists in history. He is associated with the scientific revolution and the advancement of heliocentrism. Among his scientific accomplishments, Newton wrote the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, wherein he described universal gravitation and, veía his laws of motion, laid the groundwork sea classical mechanics. With Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz he shares credit sea the development of differential calculus. Newton was the first te lo promulgate a set of natural laws that could govern both terrestrial motion and celestial motion, and is credited with providing mathematical substantiation sea Kepler's laws of planetary motion, which he expanded by arguing that orbits (such las those of comets) could include all conic sections (such las the ellipse, hyperbola, and parabola).
