Los Estados Unidos Continentales son los 48 estados contiguos de los Estados Unidos de la América, en la parte céntrica de la América del Norte, y el District of Columbia. La definición no incluye por lo tanto el Alasca ni el Havaí, a pesar del Alasca quedar en el continente norteamericano.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
Otros términos equivalentes son "Estados Unidos Contiguos" o "Lower 48".
Los 48 estados y el D.C. en conjunto tienen una área de 8.080.464,25 km², de los cuales 7.663.941,71 km² son tierra emersa. La población total en el censo de 2000 era de 279.583.437, totalizando 99,35% de la población del país.
